Make it a Really Good One 11:35 pm 11-May-2009 by Geoff
Our lives are the sum total of the choices we make and the things we do each day. So how about a checklist for a successful day. It will share it with you in the hope, that this will become a check list that you will use for making every day, extraordinary. Did I tell or show someone that I loved them? Did I compliment or praise someone I live or work with today? Did I read a book or listen to a tape that stimulated my thinking? Did I increase my skill in my professi...

Intervention 11:20 pm 11-May-2009 by Geoff
When you think about it, our lives will end up where they’re headed “unless something dramatic happens.” That is to say, serious change is almost always predicated by something dramatic and usually unforeseen. We end up out of shape and overweight when we eat poorly and don’t exercise - unless we have a heart attack or our doctor warms us of imminent health disaster. We end up taking our loved ones for granted…until someone close to us dies unexpectedly. We end up working too many hours at the e...

Consequences 10:46 pm 11-May-2009 by Geoff
I do find it interesting that children these days almost always seem to watch television horizontally! My youngest son regularly gets neck pain from lying down with his head on the armchair. I believe the consequence of an upright seating position is no neck pain! With everything in life there is [or should be] a balance of consequences. From good actions and a giving spirit will come good consequences. Foul deeds and poor decisions will in time provide the complete opposite...

Why me! 10:40 pm 11-May-2009 by Geoff
Have you ever wondered lots of bad things were happening to you all at once? I’ve had many conversations with people who have the same perception - why is all this bad stuff happening all at once? Philosophers have debated why bad stuff happens to good people for years. I have seen less evidence on why good stuff happens to good people, although we do get perturbed when seemingly rotten people seem to be enjoying great luck!! Different seasons bring differen...

Gratitude 11:00 pm 6-May-2009 by Geoff
If you observe your emotions quite carefully, you may notice that emotions shift and change like the weather. In fact, emotions are the weather patterns of the body, and no more under our conscious command than the weather outside us. We cannot will ourselves to feel happy or loving or grateful on demand; yet these and other feelings visit us. No doubt, cultivating an “attitude of gratitude” is a good thing. But such an attitude goes beyond trying to feel grateful (we can’t will ourselves to fee...

Why do rats race? 8:19 pm 6-May-2009 by Geoff
I was recently sitting on the freeway in peak traffic with a myriad of other motorists - spending an extensive period of time making very little headway. In fact the adjacent motorist appeared to be screaming at someone through his hands free! Going beserk so early in the morning! What often occurs to me in these times is that in society we have created a system that requires many of us to spend much of our waking time getting to places we really don't want to go, often doin...

Water 11:03 pm 5-May-2009 by Geoff
I seem to flying in and out of Adelaide a lot these days. The planes often fly in, and always out of Adelaide airport over the sea. Maybe it is because I am thinking innovatively after the usual plane sleep - but it always occurs to me that the problem appears that, although rain is scarce these days, we actually have masses of water and simply an unanswered problem. How do you desalinate sea water simply and with little energy? Maybe there is a new version of ...

Planning 8:49 pm 5-May-2009 by Geoff
Although planning is a great idea and essential in business, it seems to have always been far too complicated. Download a business planning template from the web I think would be enough to turn most people off. The most ardent and disciplined will get the plan done, often to find that they never look at it again! If the primary purpose of a plan is to - you guessed it - GET RESULTS, then is needs to be very simple and be a tool that rallies and aligns everyone around achieving it. Average plans ...

Tenacity 2:56 pm 5-May-2009 by Geoff
On one of my recent interstate visits, I spoke with a gentleman who has been involved in a long running family dispute that has now become amazingly 'bent out of shape'. This elderly gentleman has remained remarkably calm and clear thinking through a process that I suspect would worn most people down. His partner remarked to me that the other parties' legal team underestimated his strength and tenacity. As I reflected upon life's challenges I found this gentlem...

Destination - the Journey 9:17 pm 30-April-2009 by Geoff
Creating a business, like doing anything significant in life, requires a range of qualities. Apart from vision and leadership, it will require flexibility, tenacity, openness and definitely a sense of humour. There are points along the way that sometimes appear as opportunities, sometimes as setbacks [sometimes one and the same!]. But the destinations along the way are just that - the distinction between ' a destination' as opposed to 'the destination'. In the journ...
