A sense of entitlement

10:01 pm 4-June-2009 by Geoff

A frustrating thing for many owners and managers these days is the fact that their Generation Y employees have a habit of wanting far greater levels of involvement, combined with unabashedly asking for more money!

Baby boomers could easily dismiss this as a lack of respect. When I was a young it was normal practice to address my parents' friends as Mr. and Mrs. If you were really lucky you could call them uncle and aunt! This was consistent with having respect for your elders and those with more knowledge and experience.

Gen Y now have what Malcolm Gladwell, author of the Tipping Point calls a 'sense of entitlement'. This means that whilst there is still respect there is a shift in the balance of power back to young people to be more in control and certainly more than just employees.

The sense of entitlement that has been engendered into our young people is an attitude perfectly suited to succeeding in the modern world. It is something that we have to work with rather than working against.
